Metabolic Flexibility
“I’ve cut back on sugar, I’m trying to eat better… but I feel more tired. If anything, I feel worse.”
Is this you?
It’s frustrating… and often the point where people start to think
“What’s the point?”
“Maybe this is just how I feel now…”
and give up.
This is something I see all the time in clinic.
One of the most common reasons I see this happen is something called ... Metabolic Flexibility.
Your body has two main fuel sources
Carbohydrates
Fat
Carbohydrates give you quick, easily accessible energy.
Fat provides a slower, more sustained source of fuel.
When your body is working well, it can switch between the two seamlessly - a bit like a hybrid car moving between petrol and electric.
You don’t notice it happening, but it keeps your energy stable throughout the day and between meals.
So why might you feel more tired?
If your day used to look like cereal for breakfast, something sweet mid-morning, and snacks to get you through the afternoon… Your body essentially forgets how to switch.
So when those quick carbohydrates are reduced, your body can feel a little “stuck” in between.
This can show up as:
Low energy
Cravings
That mid-afternoon slump
It doesn’t mean something is wrong - in fact, it’s often a sign your body is starting to change.
Why this matters
This isn’t just about energy.
Metabolic flexibility plays a key role in
Blood sugar balance
Weight management
Cholesterol levels
And long-term health.
This is why we focus on regular meals, good protein intake and not relying on constant snacking - to help your body switch fuel sources again.
A gentle reminder
If you’ve recently started making changes and things don’t feel perfect straight away, try not to assume it isn’t working.
Sometimes, it’s part of the process.
And with the right support and structure, this is where things begin to improve.
If you’re doing all the “right things” but still not feeling your best, don’t second guess it - get in touch and we’ll figure out exactly what your body needs right now.
PS. These were the cupcakes for my mum and dad’s birthday… as you can probably tell, they’re my toughest critics to win over!
