Why Muscle Matters

This is me, with my steamed-up glasses after a very sweaty workout - no filter, no glamour, just real life!

This is your reminder to lift weights and build that muscle!

I’m sharing this not just as a Nutritional Therapist, but also as someone who loves to train - and as someone who once taught Les Mills Body Pump and Les Mills Grit Strength for years (if you know, you know!).

Now, I can already hear some of you thinking, “Well, it must be easy for you then!” Trust me - some mornings at 6am, the last thing I want to do is pick up a dumbbell. But I always feel better afterwards, and I know my future self will thank me.

Here’s why building muscle is one of the best investments you can make in your long-term health:

💪🏻Muscle is your metabolic best friend
More muscle means better blood sugar control, improved insulin sensitivity, and it increases your fat burning - so it’s a no-brainer!

💪🏻Strength training lowers chronic disease risk
It helps protect against type 2 diabetes and heart disease - another reason to grab those weights instead of running out the door!

💪🏻It supports hormone balance
There are many reasons but to give you an idea here is one - growth hormone - which is essential for bone health (and a nod to World Osteoporosis Day last week!).

You do need to fuel for your training though, so you’re in full building mode.

You start to lose muscle after 30 - yes I said after 30! Start where you feel comfortable and build up - and no, it will not make you bulky.

A special note for those on weight loss injections
If you’re using weight loss injections, I can’t stress enough how important strength training and building muscle is for you. This isn’t about pressure or perfection - it’s about supporting your body, protecting your metabolism, and getting the best results from your efforts.

If you’d like someone to provide the wrap-around care and accountability that the NHS recommends, I’d love to chat. You can book a call below, and we can talk through how to make this work for you.

Think of muscle as the strongest investment in your future self. Strength work supports your mitochondria - those tiny energy powerhouses inside every cell - helping you feel stronger, more energised and more resilient, inside and out.

If you’d like someone to guide you on all aspects of your health - from nutrition to strength training - and be your personal lifting cheerleader, get in touch. I’d love to support you every step of the way!
